The Birth of K&J Catering
Kurt Adamson grew up in the food and hospitality industry, working at his father’s restaurant, The Last Frontier. As he grew older, he eventually became a Restaurant Manager at The Mermaid Supper Club and was in charge of banquets in addition to day-to-day operations. As Kurt discovered his talents as a Restaurant Manager and passion for the food and hospitality industry, K&J Catering was born.
Going Into Business
While working for The Mermaid Supper Club, Kurt began offering his own catering service to his personal network through co-workers, friends and family. It wasn’t long before he realized he could start his own catering company. In 1984, he married his wife and business partner Jean Adamson, and shortly after the wedding, K&J Catering was in business. Kurt found an ad in a local newspaper posted by the Medalist Sports Club that was looking for someone to run the gym’s snack bar. Kurt jumped on the offer, which allowed him to make sales on a daily basis while also obtaining a proper license for catering thanks to the commercial kitchen the Sports Club provided.
For two years, K&J operated out of Medalist Sports Club as both a snack bar and catering company. At this point, it was time to focus solely on catering, and to drop the snack bar. Kurt and Jean purchased their first home in Lake Elmo that year, and renovated a majority of the basement into a commercial kitchen that could obtain proper licensing for off-premise catering.
In 1992, K&J Catering expanded with the purchase of two banquet venues and a commercial kitchen in North St. Paul. K&J’s exceptional flavor and unmatched service continue to make K&J Catering a favorite in the Twin Cities.
